and in other news

I'm in the process of catching up on news articles that I've set aside and what not. I don't wish to diminish the impact of my previous post, however I couldn't pass up this gem.

Vice President Dick Cheney has been invited to speak at commencement this year at BYU. I praise all there is to praise that my sister is not graduating this year, thereby exempting me from the awkward family battle that would surely ensue were I to have to boycott the exercises. Anyway, this visit has led to protests against his visit (which some have joked are a university tactic to draw attention away from the changes in the Honor Code that were revealed this past week).

But BYU protesting Cheney is news. Big news. It even made the NYTimes.

Personally, I think that this is the money quote:

Some students said they were looking forward to Mr. Cheney’s speech. David Lassen, 23, the chairman of the B.Y.U. College Republicans, said he hoped to present the vice president with petitions of support for his appearance on campus, signed by about 2,000 students and alumni.

“We’re excited for the world to see what B.Y.U. really is,” Mr. Lassen said. “No matter what you think of Cheney, he’s easily the most powerful man in the world.”

Where's Jon Stewart when you need him? That's right, a BYU student has declared that the vice president is the most powerful man in the world. Oddly enough, I figured that, from an American perspective at least, it ought to be the president.

My boss has told me that he supports my decision to protest Cheney, but he will have to fire me if I go to the protest on company time, even a lunch break, because of the Hatch Act.

I can't even post my previous two comments again. I feel dirty about even making money off of our UT property sale.

I work with a scholarship foundation and we attend countless commencement ceremonies annually, across the US. Thankfully BYU isn't on our list of campuses to visit and bestow gifts; we'd be bowing out and taking our foundation money away with us.

Now I need to find out who is speaking at our commencement where I work. ::crosses fingers::

My brother-in-law is graduating, but since they've only given each graduate 3 tickets, I won't be going. Neither will my parents, but my mom says that's probably for the better, as my dad would barely be able to contain himself from protesting against "Brother Halliburton."

What will be especially delicious if Cheney talks about something religiously unpalatable. Suppose there's any chance of it?

I think you should send this to Jon Stewart. He wants to know.
